Ahrefs works best for three types of users:

The Credit System – What You Need to Know

2. Content Explorer – Unique and Powerful
Content Explorer is Ahrefs’ most distinctive tool and the one that most clearly separates it from competitors. It searches across billions of indexed pages to find the most linked-to, shared, and trafficked content for any topic.
How to use Content Explorer for link building strategy:
- Enter a topic relevant to your client’s niche
- Sort by referring domains – highest first
- Filter by published date – last 12 months for fresh opportunities
- Look at the top results: what format attracted links? Original data, comprehensive guides, free tools?
- Identify sites that linked to these pages – they link to this type of content
- Create something better and pitch to the same sites
This workflow is the foundation of content-driven link building. Content Explorer makes it systematic, fast, and scalable. SEMrush’s Topic Research tool helps with content ideation but doesn’t surface backlink data in the same way. No other tool matches Content Explorer for this specific use case.
Additional uses: finding broken link building opportunities (popular pages that no longer exist), identifying unlinked brand mentions, and discovering guest posting opportunities by finding sites that regularly publish external content.
3. Keywords Explorer – Click Data Advantage
Ahrefs’ Keywords Explorer covers 10 billion+ keywords across 170+ countries. The database is slightly smaller than SEMrush’s 25 billion+ but more than sufficient for most keyword research workflows.
What Ahrefs does uniquely well: click data. For each keyword, Keywords Explorer shows the estimated percentage of searches that result in a click – and whether those clicks go to organic results or are captured by SERP features.
Why this matters: a keyword with 10,000 monthly searches but a 15% click-through rate has 1,500 available organic clicks. A keyword with 3,000 searches and an 80% click-through rate has 2,400 available clicks. SEMrush shows search volume but doesn’t break down click data this way. For estimating actual traffic potential rather than raw search volume, Ahrefs gives more useful data.

Ahrefs’ site audit crawls your site and identifies technical SEO issues. It has improved significantly in recent years and now covers Core Web Vitals, JavaScript rendering, and most major technical parameters.
What the audit covers:
- Broken links (internal and external)
- Missing or duplicate title tags and meta descriptions
- Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, INP)
- JavaScript rendering issues
- Redirect chains and loops
- Duplicate content and canonicalization
- HTTPS issues

Honest comparison: SEMrush’s site audit is still more comprehensive. It checks more parameters (140+ vs Ahrefs’ ~100), has a cleaner issue prioritization system, and integrates better with Core Web Vitals reporting. For agencies where technical SEO audits are a primary service, SEMrush remains the stronger choice. 5. Rank Tracking
Ahrefs’ rank tracker updates daily and covers desktop and mobile separately. You can track rankings at country, city, or zip code level – useful for local SEO clients.
The interface is clean and straightforward. Position history is shown as a graph. Competitor tracking lets you monitor up to 10 competitors’ rankings for the same keywords alongside your own.
One limitation: Ahrefs rank tracker does not integrate with Google Search Console data the way SEMrush does. For agencies that rely heavily on GSC data in client reporting, this is a gap.
6. Interface – Cleaner Than SEMrush
Ahrefs consistently receives higher usability ratings than SEMrush. The interface is more focused – each tool does one thing and the data is presented without overwhelming options.
For agencies onboarding new team members, Ahrefs takes less training time. For clients who are given temporary access to review their own data, Ahrefs is less intimidating. For quick competitive checks in client meetings, Ahrefs surfaces key numbers faster.

What Ahrefs Doesn’t Do
Being honest about limitations is what makes a review useful. Ahrefs has three significant gaps compared to SEMrush:
No competitor traffic analysis beyond organic. SEMrush’s Traffic Analytics shows total website traffic – direct, paid, referral, and social – based on clickstream data.
